Ownership and Funding

Who owns The Africans Time, how the publication is funded, and how advertising, sponsorship and commercial activity are kept separate from independent editorial decisions.

Updated

The Africans Time is founded, owned and published by Daniel Bekele. This page explains the publication's ownership, current funding model and the separation between commercial activity and independent editorial decisions.

Transparency about ownership and funding helps readers understand who controls the publication and which commercial activities support it. Commercial revenue does not create a right to influence unrelated independent editorial conclusions.

What Currently Supports the Site

The Africans Time currently supports or can support its publishing operations through:

  • display and programmatic advertising through Google AdSense;
  • direct advertising opportunities;
  • clearly labelled sponsored content;
  • clearly labelled partner or commercial content;
  • relevant commercial partnerships that meet editorial and advertising standards.

These sources support the business side of the publication. Their existence does not mean that advertisers or commercial partners direct the conclusions of independent editorial coverage.

What Does Not Currently Fund the Site

The Africans Time does not currently use the following funding models:

  • paid press-release publication;
  • affiliate marketing;
  • paid subscriptions;
  • paid editorial ranking positions.

Advertising

The Africans Time uses Google AdSense for display and programmatic advertising and may offer direct advertising opportunities.

Advertising revenue does not give an advertiser control over independent newsroom coverage, including the ability to require positive reporting, remove accurate criticism or block factual corrections.

Sponsored Content

The Africans Time accepts sponsored and partner content where the material is appropriate for its audience and clearly labelled.

Sponsored content is commercial material and is not presented as independent newsroom reporting.

Payment for sponsored content does not give the sponsor control over unrelated editorial coverage or create a permanent editorial relationship with the publication.

Research and Data Products

The Africans Time may develop research, data products and B2B intelligence services as part of its longer-term business model.

Where a commercial sponsor materially affects a research-related project, that relationship should be disclosed and the work should not be presented as independent research if the commercial arrangement materially influences the content.

Independent editorial findings must not be altered merely to satisfy a sponsor.

Editorial Independence

Advertising, sponsorship and paid visibility do not determine independent editorial conclusions.

The principle applies both to individual articles and to the publication's broader coverage choices.

Commercial Partners Cannot

  • approve independent articles;
  • purchase positive independent coverage;
  • remove accurate criticism;
  • prevent fact-based corrections;
  • dictate editorial framing solely because of payment.

Rankings and Commercial Visibility

The Africans Time may publish editorial rankings, reviews and comparisons.

Paid visibility does not determine editorial ranking position.

Advertisers cannot purchase:

  • a higher editorial ranking;
  • a better score;
  • a favourable independent review;
  • a positive editorial recommendation.

Commercial placement can therefore appear alongside editorial material without determining the editorial result itself.

Conflicts of Interest

Editors, writers and contributors should disclose material financial, commercial, institutional or personal conflicts that could reasonably affect their work.

Gifts, travel, hospitality or access should not determine editorial conclusions.

Where a relevant conflict exists and participation remains appropriate, disclosure should be considered so readers can understand the context affecting the work.

Partnerships

The Africans Time may enter into media, research, data, event or institutional partnerships.

A partnership does not automatically mean that the partner:

  • controls editorial coverage;
  • is endorsed by The Africans Time in every respect;
  • receives guaranteed newsroom coverage.

Material partnerships should be disclosed where relevant to a reader's understanding of specific content.

History

The Africans Time was established in 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Changes in Ownership or Funding

This page should be updated if there is a material change such as:

  • a change in ownership;
  • creation of a separate legal publishing company;
  • material external investment;
  • introduction of affiliate marketing;
  • introduction of paid subscriptions;
  • a significant change in the publication's commercial model.

The purpose of this section is to keep the ownership and funding description aligned with the publication's actual structure rather than leaving outdated information in place.
